An energetic and broadly capable educator is required as a Tutor to support the education of four siblings aged 14, 12, 7 and nearly 3. Starting as soon as possible, teaching will mostly take place in Milan. Fluency in German and Italian as well as English is imperative and familiarity with the German education system would be advantageous. A strong musical ability in voice or an instrument is also highly desirable.
The family, who are currently based in Milan, have four children. The three younger siblings are all enrolled at the German School of Milan (DSM) and are following the German curriculum. The eldest (14) is preparing for GCSEs in the UK. The focus of this search is for the 7 year old boy who is in first grade. However, his older siblings, (14 and 12), will also require support outside of school. The youngest, soon to be 3 years old, would benefit from an early start with music as well.
Despite being only 7, this student is already showing signs of insecurity at school. He is afraid of failing and requires the attention of a positive teacher and mentor to motivate and teach in a fun, interactive and relaxed atmosphere.
He has recently fallen behind in mathematics (in particular) and will require the help of someone who enjoys working with younger children and their shorter attention spans to address this. He enjoys chess, learning the piano and singing in a local choir.
The eldest boy is in 9th Grade and is a competent, independent student who generally enjoys school. Once underconfident in maths, he currently portrays no evident struggles in his studies and works hard across the board.
This student displays an artistic flair, showing a strong appreciation of music and especially singing. He also enjoys playing board games and cards with his siblings, with whom, occasional disputes naturally arise.
A keen dancer and gymnast, the 12 year old girl shares artistic interests with her elder brother and would like to take up sewing in the future. She is currently in 7th Grade and doing well at school. She would appreciate a patient, caring teacher who could identify any weaknesses and offer clear solutions and supporting resources.
The children all enjoy drawing and are interested in a range of sports, including tennis, skiing, ice skating and swimming. They would also like to continue to play chess and to explore various history topics in greater detail.
The ideal Tutor for this role will boast a wealth of expertise across a wide spectrum of subjects and age ranges. He or she will need to plan their time efficiently to ensure a positive learning experience for all the children, whilst nurturing confidence and providing rewarding challenges. It is imperative to instil a general love of learning and to encourage independence and autonomy of private study as well.
The tutor will be responsible for ensuring the 7 year old boy is organised and prepared for school each day as well as helping him with his homework. They will also need to focus on his number work and make sure any knowledge gaps and/or misconceptions are addressed quickly.
His sister (12) will likely require additional help with physics and would also benefit from more support with her German reading and writing skills.
The Tutor will also need to focus on improving both of their Italian language fluency. They are relatively new to Italy and their parents would like to see them continue to progress in language acquisition and fluency.
The eldest sibling's talent for music should not be underestimated. He has enormous potential and is preparing for a GCSE in Music. It is essential that music – for the fun alone – be a central skill of the Tutor. He will also benefit from additional support in English and Biology during the school holidays.
All three students should be encouraged to read and write more extensively, therefore, a well-read and passionate Tutor will serve as great inspiration to enthuse writing composition and foster a love of reading. They will discourage screen time, limiting it only to necessary, educational purposes.
The Tutor must cater for all individual needs and meticulously plan and deliver bespoke material for each student. Through the promotion of enjoyment and success in learning, the children will become well-rounded individuals ready to cope with a range of situations in later life.
With four children in total and busy, demanding jobs, the family lead an eventful lifestyle, which can be hectic at times. However, an able Tutor will take this in their stride and adapt accordingly, including when travelling, to optimise geographical locations and access to diverse resources.
The Tutor should expect to work with the children for around 40 hours per week, with preparation in addition. Habitually, these hours have been afterschool, Monday-Thursday, with Friday and Saturday as the two designated days off per week. The tutor should then expect to be available between 10am and 6pm on Sundays and during school holidays. However, as always with a busy household, a willingness to be flexible is crucial.
The Tutor will be entitled to a minimum of 9 weeks holiday (45 working days) per year, to be taken during school holidays and at times agreed upon with the family. The Tutor will be flexible with respect to any changes in schedule, be they travel-related or otherwise and will adapt accordingly. The Client will strive to give up to two weeks’ notice of any planned alterations.
In addition to the tutoring fees, the Tutor will be given a stipend of €3000 per month and will make accommodation arrangements themselves in Milan. The stipend is sufficient to cover rent and all other bills on the Tutor’s accommodation. The Client is not responsible for the Tutor’s personal phone bills.
Joining a multilingual and culturally rich household, the successful candidate will be able to offer more than the minimum requirements of this position. They will uphold excellent academic standards, whilst providing a personable environment where learning and fun go hand in hand. They will be a positive role model and inspire the love of a range of subjects.
The Tutor must be a fit and healthy non-smoker, hopefully able to instruct or partake in the array of sports enjoyed by the children.
