Hong Kong (HK 0916 E)

This position is not currently available

An experienced and capable educator is required for a full time after school support role, working with a girl aged 10. The family aim to have her accepted to a top British private school. The role is based in Hong Kong with some additional travel

Student

The girl is the youngest of two siblings and attends an International school in Hong Kong. She is bright, engaging and polite, and can be charming when it suits her. She can also be quite demanding, and likes to challenge her teachers. Her Tutor needs to be highly knowledgeable and able to answer questions patiently while remaining lively and fun, and while maintaining the principles of discipline. If the Tutor cannot demonstrate these qualities while keeping firm boundaries, she will take advantage of the situation. The girl seems to be doing well in school, and likes interesting teachers who can make lessons come alive. She does not like those who are unfair or unclear. She does not like to feel foolish.

She is motivated and interested in the world around her. She excels in an academic environment as long as new material is presented in an appealing and engaging way. She is confident and quick, and to the right Tutor will be a delight to teach. She really enjoys singing, piano, ballet, art, hockey and equestrian sports, as well as general outdoor activities. The ideal Tutor will share some or all of these interests.

Role of the Tutor

This role calls for an able, calm and well-qualified tutor who has themselves attended and gained experience working in top-level British private schools and is up-to-date on British teaching pedagogies and values. The Tutor must be able to deliver the full range of primary subjects, including French, Classics and music/singing, and should have an exceptional track record in preparing students for the 11+ exams. The Tutor will must be comfortable working at the standards of the best London private schools, and have proven experience in the British private school curricula. This Tutor will be one of a team of three Tutors, two from Tutors International and one sourced locally.

The Tutor will likely spend the afternoons helping the girl with her homework, ensuring it is completed to the highest standards and that she has fully understood the day’s lessons. Additional subjects can then be explored. The Tutor should start slowly before introducing increasingly targeted tasks. The Tutor must be highly organised with excellent record-keeping skills. He or she must build good working relationships not only with the girl but also her brother, their parents, other Tutors, and with other members of the family’s staff. The girl is the clear focus of this assignment, but there may be some overlap with the other two Tutors (who work with her brother) in terms of helping to provide a balanced and varied education for both children and as such, experience teaching Special Educational Needs would be advantageous.

The Tutor will be a superb educator and a good role model: educated and polished, with excellent manners and personal values. The Tutor will be partly responsible for the children’s character education, teaching manners alongside virtues such as gratitude, resilience and respect for others. It would be a bonus to find Tutors whose personal interests encompass music, art or sports, and who can share their passions with the whole family. This role is best suited to someone who has a strong spirit of adventure and is not easily fazed by new cultures. They should be happy to take advantage of their location, embracing the opportunities that are presented to them.

The successful candidate will offer more than the minimum requirements of this position, will have been raised in a socially appropriate background and speak clear English without any discernible regional dialect, as their first language. The Tutor must be a qualified teacher, with at least three years’ teaching experience. Experience teaching in Asia EFL or international experience would also useful.

Hours and Holidays

The Tutor will work for an average of up to 40 hours a week with preparation time in addition. The Tutor is entitled to two consecutive days off per week, but will need to be flexible in this regard.

The Tutor is entitled to a minimum of 45 working days paid vacation. The 45 days off should be taken at times convenient to the Client. Untaken ‘weekends’, paid vacation, or public holiday that have accrued will be compensated by a pro-rated payment in lieu at the end of the contract

Accommodation, Travel, and Miscellaneous

The Client will provide accommodation suitable for an individual Tutor (this role is not suited to tutoring couples or families) and will cover all bills on this accommodation, except for the Tutor’s personal phone bills. The Client will cover all travel expenses associated with this role, plus meals and food during any periods of travel. The Tutor should not expect to have a car while in Hong Kong.

The Tutor must be fit and healthy, a non-smoker. The Tutor must have the requisite travel and health insurance, vaccinations, and has the necessary visas.
